A new genus and species of soft coral (Octocorallia: Alcyonacea: Alcyoniidae) from Lord Howe Island, Australia Naturalis
Alderslade, P..
Lohowia koosi, a new species and new genus in the family Alcyoniidae, is described from Lord Howe Island, Australia. The new taxon has dimorphic polyps and a similar morphology to some of the flat, lobe-less nominal species of Lobophytum. The new taxon is clearly distinguished, however, by the possession of large, heavily armed autozooids, polypary surface sclerites in the form of large spindles that protrude through the surface, extremely large interior sclerites and base surface sclerites in the form of rods, spindles and ovals.

Van Ofwegen, Leen P.; Aurelle, Didier; Sartoretto, Stephane.
A new genus of soft coral from the Republic of Congo is described, Complexum gen. n. Nine West African octocoral species previously described in the genus Alcyonium by Tixier-Durivault (1955) are referred to this new genus, and a new species is described and figured, C. pusillum sp. n. The new species is characterized by having encrusting growth form and abundant spiny clubs in the surface of the polyparium. It colonizes shallow calcareous rocky banks (5 to 20 m depth) existing in coastal water of the region of Pointe-Noire. Based on molecular phylogeny this new genus is well separated from Alcyonium species.

A study of the Xeniidae (Octocorallia, Alcyonacea) collected on the "Tyro" expedition to the Seychelles with a description of a new genus and species Naturalis
Janes, M.P..
An examination of xeniid octocorals was carried out on specimens held in the National Museum of Natural History, Naturalis, Leiden, Netherlands. Samples collected during the Tyro expedition to the Seychelles Islands in the Western Indian Ocean were identified. Six species belong to the genera Cespitularia, Heteroxenia, and Ovabunda are described; five of these are new records for this location. Three new species belonging to the genera Anthelia, Cespitularia and Ovabunda are illustrated. In addition, a new genus belonging to the family Xeniidae is introduced accompanied by scanning electron micrographs of its sclerites. Gross morphology and the ultra-structure of the sclerites indicate there are some similarities in this new genus with Anthelia. However,...

Benthic shallow-water hydroids (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) of the coast of São Sebastião, Brazil, including a checklist of Brazilian hydroids Naturalis
Migotto, A.E..
The paper presents the results of a general survey of the hydroid fauna of the coastal region of the São Sebastião Channel, São Paulo State, Brazil. Intensive collecting in the intertidal and infralittoral zones, from 1984 to 1992, led to the discovery of many species, some of which are small and inconspicuous. Out of 59 species of hydroids (17 athecate and 42 thecate) described and illustrated, three are new records for the Atlantic Ocean, six for the western South Atlantic, and 21 for the Brazilian coast. The medusa stage of Asyncoryne ryniensis and the cnidome of 24 species are described for the first time. The paper also contains a synopsis of the hydroids recorded from the Brazilian coast, the list now including 107 species. Pseudostenotele...

Corymorpha tomoensis Ikeda, 1910 (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa): first record of a corymorphid hydropolyp from Indonesian waters and a review of the species of Corymorpha M. Sars, 1835 Naturalis
Vervoort, W..
A description is given of a corymorphid polyp, Corymorpha tomoensis Ikeda, 1910, collected during an expedition of the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, The Netherlands, to the Indonesian island of Ambon. This is the first record of a polyp of the genus Corymorpha M. Sars, 1835 from Indonesian waters; corymorphid medusae were collected during the Siboga Expedition and described by Maas (1905) as Euphysora bigelowi; the polyp of that species was subsequently reared in the laboratory (Sassaman & Rees, 1978) and identified as a species of Corymorpha. Species now classified in Corymorpha M. Sars, 1835 are briefly reviewed and their status and distribution discussed.

De steelkwallen van Nederland (Cnidaria: Staurozoa) Naturalis
Faasse , M.A.; Waajen , S..

Dry season distribution of hydroids in a small tropical estuary, Pernambuco, Brazil Naturalis
Calder, D.R.; Maÿal, E.M..
Hydroid distribution patterns along a horizontal ecocline in the Rio Formoso/Rio Ariquindá/Rio Porto Alegre system, a small and seasonally poikilohaline estuary on the tropical northeast coast of Brazil, were investigated. Collecting was undertaken during the dry season, in November 1993, by diving (with and without SCUBA). Nine stations were sampled on a transect extending from a reef outside the river mouth to a mangrove system at the upper end of the estuary. Four major regions were distinguished along the ecocline based on numerical analyses of hydroid species/station location data: (1) nearshore reef — a sandstone ledge outside the entrance of the estuary; (2) river mouth — a sandy and shelly flood-tidal delta area inside the entrance of the Rio...

Evidence for a genetic sex determination in Cnidaria, the Mediterranean red coral (Coralliumrubrum) ArchiMer
Pratlong, M.; Haguenauer, A.; Chenesseau, S.; Brener, K.; Mitta, Guillaume; Toulza, E.; Bonabaud, M.; Rialle, S.; Aurelle, D.; Pontarotti, P..
dSexual reproduction is widespread among eukaryotes, and the sex-determining processes vary greatly among species. While genetic sex determination (GSD) has been intensively described in bilaterian species, no example has yet been recorded among non-bilaterians. However, the quasi-ubiquitous repartition of GSD among multicellular species suggests that similar evolutionary forces can promote this system, and that these forces could occur also in non-bilaterians. Studying sex determination across the range of Metazoan diversity is indeed important to understand better the evolution of this mechanism and its lability. We tested the existence of sexlinked genes in the gonochoric red coral (Corallium rubrum, Cnidaria) using restriction site-associated DNA...

Experiments in nature and laboratory observations with Nausithoe aurea (Scyphozoa: Coronatae) support the concept of perennation by tissue saving and confirm dormancy Biota Neotropica
Silveira,Fábio Lang da; Jarms,Gerhard; Morandini,André Carrara.
Stephanocyphistomae of Nausithoe aurea from São Paulo State, Brazil (in subtropical western South Atlantic wa-ters), were relocated with their substrata in nature to study their survivorship under control and and experimental series - i.e. the polyps in the original orientation and inverted, and in each series exposed and buried polyps. We found that N. aurea survives over 13 months in nature, between 1/3 - 1/4 of 268 stephanoscyphistomae as normal feeding polyps, by segmentation produces planuloids and rejuvenates the polyps - an additional explanation for clustering of the solitary stephanocyphistomae. Dormant living tissues within the periderm of the tube were considered resting stages. The results support the concept that coronates in general have the...
